READ THIS IF:
– You’ve ever compared your spouse / significant other / boss to a soul-sucking monster.
– You’d invite a cannibalistic murderer into your home for coffee and pizza.
MY THOUGHTS:
Holly Black outdid herself with this conclusion to the series.
I highlighted a solid third of the book and dreaded the ending knowing it was the last time I’d see these characters until at least 2023 (The Stolen Heir, which focuses on Oak is anticipated to be released 2023).
I could make this entire review a love letter to Cardan Greenbriar, but I won’t.
I could also make this review a love letter to Grima Mog, because I didn’t think a ruthless cannibal could be lovable, but alas here we are.
The only reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars is for how rushed the ending felt to me. Yes, I finished it in less than 48 hrs but when you cram both a story climax and conclusion into 35 pages it leaves me feeling like something was missing even if it wasn’t. For reference, I felt a similar way with Mockingjay and became convinced that Suzanne Collins refused to write a book longer than 400 pages even when her characters deserved it. Unlike Collins, Black does her characters justice – just way more efficiently than my Cardan-Greenbriar-loving heart would have liked.
