REVIEW: “A Light in the Flame” by Jennifer Armentrout

READ THIS IF:

  • You crave more steamy Nyktos/Sera scenes.
  • You like trilogies, and don’t mind middle installments that feel like the red-headed stepchild of it. No offense to red-headed stepchildren.
  • You can tolerate leaving off on a cliffhanger for a whole year.

MY THOUGHTS:

Let me be clear: I enjoyed this book. I did.

Yet, I did what I almost never do. I waited a week after finishing it to let my emotions stew before writing this. Something just didn’t sit right. The answer: A huge chunk of this story felt like the characters were just waiting around. Waiting for things to happen. It dragged for the first 400 pages, and that’s the entire length of most books.

I often find this in middle installments of trilogies, so I wasn’t surprised but I’m still peeved.

If your favorite part of ASITE was the romance – you are going to love ALITF. This book is full of steamy scenes, and it’s very satisfying to Nyktos/Sera fans in that regard. I just need a better balance of romance with action/adventure moments.

I need monsters.

I need battles.

The “uglier” the better.

I don’t know what that says about me.

While this hefty 652 page book gave us some of that, it wasn’t well-balanced so my favorite parts were diluted.

All of that aside, I still intend to preorder the third installment – which comes out December 2023. 12 months exactly after I finished this one. ALITF doesn’t dwindle my appreciation of Armentrout’s universe, but I need redemption with the next book.
